COURSES

The curriculum for the Clinical Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy(Hwalgong) Massage Program is divided into five areas: Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Professional Development, Physical Arts, and Clinical Internship.

Anatomy & Physiology

Basic Medical Sciences include courses that contain basic sciences information in both Eastern and Western medical traditions. This course provides the study of basic structure and functions of the human body, an in-depth study of blood and the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, urinary, and reproductive systems of the human body. The student learns to identify and locate these systems and to describe their functions. At the conclusion of this course, the student should understand the normal anatomical and physiological relationships among all of the major systems in the human body.

Myology / Kinesiology

Myology is a detailed study of the muscular system of the body, including nomenclature, histology, anatomy, and physiological aspects of the system. The student will learn the origin and insertion of each muscle, and to physically locate, palpate, and demonstrate the action of the major muscle groups. A keen awareness of the skeletal structure is needed for the student to participate in the practice of palpation and muscle testing.

Pathology

Pathology is the study of human disease conditions. The scope of practice, goals of treatment, and various treatment modalities will be discussed for certain neuromusculoskeletal and organic diseases, with emphasis on indications and contraindications for treatment of these symptoms. Basic concepts such as cellular adaptation, the inflammatory response, types of pain, tissue repair and healing, hot & cold therapies, immunological diseases, and genetic and developmental
diseases will be addressed. Disease conditions related to the major systems of the body will be covered, with holistic treatments and lifestyle issues emphasized where applicable.

Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy (Hwalgong)

Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy is a system of massage theory and technique from the Korean tradition of healing arts(Hwalgong), with its recorded history of more than 4,000 years. Superficially similar to the Shiatsu Massage, which takes its name from the Japanese-adapted Chinese characters literally meaning ¡®Acupressure,¡¯ Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy seeks to relieve pain and induce relaxation by facilitating the flow of life energy through the energy channels of the body called the ¡®Meridians¡¯ by using highly specific and refined system of massage motions and technique.

However, Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy has a deeper and more important goal of sensitizing the client's body to the flow of the energy and using this sensitivity to enhance the natural healing powers of the body. It has its basis in traditional Eastern Medicine, and uses the same principles of energy and meridians as acupuncture or acupressure.

Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy is used by professional therapists to treat ailments including musculoskeletal problems, applied to client preceding the Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy session. Dahn is performed to stretch and relax client to achieve optimal effects of Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy, similar to strokes and theories involved in Sports massage and Yoga Therapy.

Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy is based on the movement of life energy Ki along meridians or channels in the body which can be influenced at specific points on the body. Stimulating these points externally by hands pressure or massage
is said to reduce excessive Ki where its flow is blocked and to restore it where it is underactive. As well as hands pressure, practitioners may use elbows, knees and even feet to apply pressure or massage to the correct points.

The Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapist is not just a manipulator of muscles and deep tissues, but a conduit through which the energy of the universe flows
through to reach the client, injecting a fresh current of positive energy and unblocking the energy blockages through the body - source of pain and disease - through its powerful flow. It is more of an education in healing than a simple treatment and thereby includes breathing techniques, meditation, energy sensitivity training, and other techniques within its array of tools. This class is focused on intensive hands-on practice Body & Brain Harmonizing Therapy palpation techniques by students.

Sports Massage

Pre and post event techniques incorporating prevention and treatment of the most
common athletic injuries are taught in this course. Warm up and wind
down, as well as muscles and areas to be massaged for soccer players,
basketball players, cyclists, aerobic and fitness enthusiasts, body
builders, long-distance runners, golfers, swimmers, and tennis players
are among the sports massage practices taught. Discussion of stretching,
range of motion, acupressure and a variety of techniques are presented
and practiced with a breakdown on age and particular sports, and level
of fitness.

Reflexology

The origin, theory, principles, and techniques of reflexology are taught and practiced in this course. Reflexology is based on the principle that there are corresponding reflex points on the hands and feet for each organ, gland, and structure in the body. The reflexologist can reduce tension and unblock ¡°congested¡± areas by working on these reflexes. Contraindications are also taught.

Hydrotherapy

The application and benefits of different types of hydrotherapy are taught in this course. Benefits of Hot & Cold therapy and their contraindications are discussed in depth as well as the benefits of body scrubs.

Yoga

Dahn Technique is a collection of stretches, strokes, range of motion, and
massage technique, in conjunction with breath work, applied to the client at the beginning of and during a massage session. This technique combines yoga, breathing, deep stretching, calisthenics, and meditation to sensitize the practitioner and client to the flow of energy, and enable them to direct the flow of energy with physical concentration and physical will. Dahn Technique provides an efficient method for the practitioners to increase the client's circulation and assist in
relaxation, ultimately to enhance the effects of each session to the optimal level. During this course students will demonstrate knowledge in Kinesiology, Myology, and the relationship of the two subjects in massage therapy. The focus of this course is to ensure students' competence in applied Kinesiology, through intensive practical application of passive and active assisted motions on clients.
(Continuing Education Subject)

Brain Respiration Therapy (Brain Rejuvination)

Brain Respiration Therapy is a combination of gentle massage and breath work
to stimulate the individual cerebral lobes and neurons, thereby cleansing and rehabituating the brain circuit. Furthermore, BR Therapy works on a crainiospinal path to stimulate and recover the entire nervous system in attempt to maximize mental function.

The purpose of this course is to teach the basic technique and concepts
of BR Therapy. BR Therapy regards the human brain in multiple dimensions, most importantly as software and hardware. What extends from the cranium to the sacrum? What controls the billions of neurons and hundreds of muscles? It's the brain. BR Therapy covers a wide range of means to tap into one's body, physically and energetically, in order to increase the function of your brain to its fullest potential.

All human beings, dogs, and even reptiles possess a brain. What characteristics make a human being a human? Our brain can be divided into the three layers according to its functions, which refer to Brain Stem, Limbic System, and Neo-Cortex.

Each of these layers contains the characteristics of each different evolutionary step for humanity. Even though each layer exchanges information with the others, they are functionally separated and have safety devices in order to prevent each layer from being adversely affected by the others.

in professional practice. It is also designed to be a cornerstone in the

therapists. Topic areas to be covered include regulation of the profession and codes of ethics, issues of boundaries in relation to bodywork, interpersonal aspects of therapeutic relationships with an emphasis on transference, counter transference, and the responsibility of the therapists, emotional awareness as it relates to the bodywork, and the psychological factors of physical illness.
